Body outline shape flask-like to oval whose anterior end is always truncated transversely. Oral aperture apical, slit-like, whose edge is often slightly concave but never domed. Cytopharynx supported by trichites. Cilia around edge of oral aperture often long and always more closely packed than on the rest of the body. Somatic ciliation complete and uniform except for 3 kineties whose anterior ends are very closely packed. These represent the dorsal brush. Macronucleus varies from spherical to elongate and ribbon-like. Contractile vacuole usually single and terminal but rarely with large terminal vacuole plus several smaller vacuoles.
