Body elongate, usually trumpet-shaped as in Vaginicola but stouter. Lorica erect, mounted upon a short outer stalk but without valves; sometimes with transverse ridges or folds around them and may contain 1 or 2 zooids. The macronucleus is band or ribbon-shaped. The genus, which was first described by Ehrenberg, is mainly marine but there are about 8 epizooic freshwater species. The genus is most easily confused with Cyclodonta in which the zooid is attached to the lorica via a series of membranes. It could also be mistaken for the following two erect loricate genera, Pseudothuricola and Pyxicola which both have a means of closing the lorica when the animal contracts.
