Center for Global Environmental Research

Outline of Research ( pamphlet )

The Center for Global Environmental Research (CGER) works to clarify the effects that humans have on the global environment and builds a foundation for the establishment of appropriate conservation measures. It was founded in 1990 as Japan’s core facility for research on the global environment and is charged with implementing the institute’s research on climate change, including both the project-based “Priority Program on Climate Change” and a number of activities that provide a scientific basis for global environmental research, such as monitoring the global environment, maintaining databases, along with bringing together inter-disciplinary, inter-agency, and international research on the global environment. CGER also serves as a secretariat for a number of domestic and international research organizations.

Strategic Monitoring of the Global Environment

Global environmental research requires a clear understanding of current conditions based on the accumulation of long-term observational data. CGER conducts innovative environmental monitoring through international collaboration in light of the latest research trends and the current state of society. We use ground-based observation sites, ships, and airplanes to monitor ecosystems and the atmospheric, oceanic, and terrestrial carbon balance, in addition to monitoring the water quality of inland lakes. This collection of high quality data allows us to develop a clear picture of the current state of the global environment and discover the causes of changes in the environment.

Maintaining a Global Environment Database

CGER creates and maintains a fundamental database system that includes the data obtained from our monitoring activities (natural science) and data from our research in the social sciences, in addition to our research findings. This data is made available to the research community and the public in a variety of ways. We maintain a variety of databases in an integrated way so that the data can be accessed and used easily, and also develop integrated analysis systems and tools (e.g. for air-mass trajectory analysis) and make them available to the public.

Integration of Global Environmental Research

The Center for Global Environmental Research acts as a focal point for a number of international and domestic projects and activities in order to facilitate exchange among researchers and to systematize their ability to interact with each other. Also, through its website, newsletters, reports, and other publications, CGER is able to keep the public informed on global environmental issues and provide an important platform for researchers to exchange their opinions.
