Distribution of Individual Mangrove Species
A total of 74 mangrove species and hybrids are considered by this website in line with the World Atlas of Mangroves (2010). Two distinct floristic regions of mangrove distribution are specified. The Indo-West Pacific region extends from East Africa eastwards to the islands of the Central Pacific, and is home to 63 species. The other is the Atlantic East Pacific region, including all of the Americas, and West and Central Africa, with 12 species. There are no overlapping species except for the mangrove fern Acrostichum aureum. The center of global mangrove diversity is South East Asia, where the highest diversity of species can be seen in Indonesia and Malaysia, with 47 and 53 species respectively.
The tables shown here depict species distribution information which has been confirmed through various sources: scientific papers, books, reports, websites, field confirmation and personal communications. The tables also contain “Introduced” or “Extinct” species where information was available.
A list of data sources is available for end-users.
The tables are still under construction and more work is needed to generate accurate species distribution tables, especially where less documentation is available. Any input, suggestions and comments are welcome.
