Theme 4

Study on effective use of monitoring of long-lived greenhouse gases and short-lived climate forcers to promote environmental policies and measures

The goal of this theme is to promote utilization of project outcomes for policy development and implementation. Even highly accurate observations and model analyses, unless communicated to stakeholders in a clear and easy-to-understand manner, will not have an impact on policymaking. The lack of effective communication is a shortcoming of many scientific projects. In the S-22 project, the research group specializing in social sciences within the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) aims to serve as a bridge between science and society. Sub-theme (1) seeks to analyze global trends in climate policy and develop strategies to effectively utilize the atmospheric monitoring data generated by this project in environmental policies by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and others. Sub-theme (2) will be responsible for communicating with domestic stakeholders—such as businesses, local governments, and citizens—so that they can make effective use of the information generated through this project to strengthen and implement their own climate actions.
