About Initiative

Aim of Snapshot Japan

An important challenge for human is to build a society in which biodiversity is maintained, restored and managed to ensure that both the current and future generations of people will be able to sustainablly enjoy the benefits it provides. In order to realize such a society in harmony with nature, reliable and testable biodiversity indicators are needed. Snapshot Japan is the Japanese version of Snapshot Global , a collaborative wildlife monitoring initiative that uses easy-to-use infrared sensor cameras (camera traps) and the unified installation method around the world to monitor wildlife. The aim of Snapshot Japan is as follows;

  • To provide fundamental database for assessing global trends of wildlife for helping conservation action, sustainable use and reduction of conflicts with humans,
  • To obtain high quality data that is widely applicable to elucidate wildlife responses to various environmental changes, and
  • To promote camera trapping as a citizen science and to facilitate the educational use of the data and wildlife images obtained.


Roles in Snapshot Japan

Subprojects:
Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-Principal Investigator (CO-PI) have conducted the camera trap survey in each subproject site. The images taken from each site will be annotated by the PI and CO-PI. PI and CO-PI can also conduct the innovative study using the Snapshot Japan datasets.

Snapshot Japan Team:
Project Manager (PM) and Project Coordinator (PC) handle the images taken from each subproject and held the webinar for Snapshot Japan participants. The team members consist of the PI or CO-PI of the subprojects.
