Environmental Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) are utilized to evaluate new analytical methods and to control the accuracy of pretreatment and instrumental analyses.

National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) have been preparing and distributing environmental and biological CRMs since 1980.

We have provided 52 countries with thousands of bottles for the past 20 years.
At present, 14 CRMs are available (including 1 CRM which cannot be sent overseas).

How to Order

List of CRMs

  • CRM No.3 was prepared from spray-dried chlorella commercially manufactured. It has high concentrations of Fe and P , though low concentrations of heavy metals. Certified values are provided for K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Sr, Zn, Cu, Co, and reference values are reported for P, Pb, Cd and Sc.
  • CRM No.8 is an air particulate matter reference material, which is closely related to automobile transportation problems. The material used for CRM No.8 was collected from electrostatic precipitators in huge ventilators connected to a highway tunnel. Certified values are provided for Ca, Al, Na, K, Zn, Mg, Pb, Sr, Cu, Cr, Ni, V, Sb, Co, As, Cd and reference values are reported for P, Br, Mo, Rb, Ce, Se, La, Sc, Th, Cs, Ag, Sm, Eu, and Lu.
  • CRM No.10-d, which continues NIES CRM No.10 series, was developed and certified for the determination of cadmium and other elements in unpolished rice and materials of similar matrix. Certified values are given for eight elements and reference values for a further five elements.
  • CRM No.12 was prepared from the sediment at the center of Bay of Tokyo. Certified values are provided for tributyltin and total tin, and reference values for triphenyltin and 21 elememts , Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti,V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, Cd, Ba, Hg, and Pb.
  • CRM No.13 is prepared for use in evaluation of accuracy of methylmercury and selected heavy metals( Hg, Cd,Cu, Pb, Sb, Se, Zn)of human hair and other samples with similar matrices. Each bottle contains approximately 3 g of homogeneous human hair powder.
  • CRM No.15 Scallop was developed and certified for the determination of tributyltin, triphenyltin, and total tin in scallops and materials of similar matrix.
  • CRM No.18 is intended for use in quality assurance of analysis of arsenic and other selected trace elements in urine. One unit of NIES CRM No.18 consists of two bottles, each bottle containing freeze-dried urine corresponding to approximately 10 ml. Certified values are provided for As, arsenobetaine, dimethylarsinic acid, Se, and Zn. Reference values are reported for Cu and Pb.
  • CRM No.23 was developed and certified for the determination of multi-elements in tea leaves and materials of similar matrix. Certified values are provided for 9 elements, and reference values for 5 elements. This CRM supersedes NIES CRM No. 7 Tea Leaves.
  • CRM No.24 FLY Ash II was prepared from fly ash. Certified values are provided for PCDDs and PCDFs, while reference values for dioxin-like PCBs.
  • CRM No.26 was prepared from the blue-green alga Microcystis. Certified values are provided for Microcystin and Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na, Mn, Sr, Zn, while reference values for S, P, Co, Cu, Ni and Pb.
  • CRM No.27 is intended for use in quality assurance of analyses of minor and trace elements in the Japanese diet and in similar food matrices. It was produced by the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Ibaraki, Japan, and the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS), Chiba, Japan.
  • CRM No.28 is intended for use in quality assurance of analyses of elements in aerosols. Certified values are provided for 18 elements and reference values for 14 elements.
  • CRM No.29 is intended for use in quality assurance of analyses of elements in water hyacinth and similar water plants. Certified values are provided for 13 elements and reference values for 6 elements.
  • CRM No.30 was developed and certified for the determination of multi-elements in Asian mineral dust (kosa dust) originating from arid areas of the Gobi Desert in north-east Asia, and in materials of similar matrix.
