COP12 & COP/MOP2 Side Event: Global Challenges Toward a Low-Carbon Society (LCS) Through Sustainable Development (SD)

  • Thursday, October 26, 2006

DESCRIPTION

The National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), with the cooperation of the Ministry of the Environment (Japan) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (United Kingdom) will hold a side event entitled "Global Challenges Toward a Low-Carbon Society (LCS) Through Sustainable Development (SD)" at the twelfth session of the Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention (COP12) and the second meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP/MOP2) which will be held from November 6 to 17 in Nairobi, Kenya.

In order to realize a low-carbon society, we have to devise measures that can be implemented in both developed and developing countries.  This event will include presentations and a panel discussion by participants from various countries, including China and the United Kingdom.  We will focus our discussion on the results of the joint Japan-UK workshop on developing visions for a low-carbon society that was held in June 2006 in Tokyo.

In addition, NIES will also offer an exhibit that gives an overview of the current status and findings of research on global warming and climate change including Japan's greenhouse gas inventory, monitoring of atmospheric and oceanic greenhouse gases, climate change projections based on global climate models (GCM), and the Asia-Pacific Integrated Model (AIM).
