Objectives |
Resources and waste issues have been becoming international
concerns these days. The result of recent material flow analysis
shows that domestic consumption of resources causes serious environmental
burdens to other countries as well as in its own country. Moreover,
it is not known that recent domestic waste disposal and recycling
are closely related to the import/export of used products and their
actual conditions of the treatment and environmental impacts in
the countries.
We, therefore, organize the symposium, "International Symposium
on Sustainable Material Cycles".
This symposium consists of two parts. In the first part, "International
Seminar on Material Flow Analysis/Accounting", the trend of
research on advanced material flow analysis/accounting under international
cooperation will be introduced.
In the second part, "The 1st Workshop on Material Cycles and
Waste Management in Asian Countries" will be held as a part
of our new project. The project aims to make clear the structures
of material cycles and also aims to clarify and to prevent the environmental
pollutions in the material cycle processes in Asia. As the first
step of the project, we will start sorting out the existing statistics
on wastes in Asian countries, and will deepen the understanding
about the current situations of recycling and the import/export
of used products such as electric appliances and automobiles in
each country.
NIES and UNU/IAS, act as the joint hosts, have invited many experts
of various countries. This would be a great opportunity to promote
research exchanges between researchers of material flow analysis
and Asian experts of wastes and recycling. The symposium will also
celebrate the completion of the Research Laboratory of Material
Cycles and Waste Management in this March. We plan a tour of this
new Research Laboratory and look forward very much to your participation. |
