趣旨

つくばE3セミナーは、つくば周辺の生態学、進化生物学、環境生物学の研究者が交流する場として2013年から始められました。分野や研究機関の垣根を越えた交流を活発化し、つくばの生物・環境系の研究を盛り上げることを目的としています。

現在、国立環境研究所、農研機構 農業環境変動研究センター、森林総合研究所の研究者有志により運営されていますが、外部からの参加も歓迎します。

講演要旨

Survival determines the lifespan of organisms and is a critical parameter of Darwinian fitness. It is influenced by many environmental factors, including anthropogenic ones (i.e., global changes). Survival is also shaped by intrinsic factors such as species traits and life-history strategies. In addition, age plays a major role in survival trajectories, with the intensity of actuarial senescence (i.e., the increase in mortality with age) varying greatly between species. For a long time, our understanding of these processes has mainly been based on studies of mammals and birds. However, these species represent only a small part of the phylogenetic and functional diversity of vertebrates. This taxonomic bias distorts our understanding of vertebrate lifespan biology and aging, while also causing a significant data gap in endangered species (e.g., amphibians, chelonians). My research aims to balance our knowledge of vertebrate demography by improving our understanding of survival and senescence patterns in major yet poorly studied phylogenetic groups, such as amphibians and reptiles. In this seminar, I will present my recent work on these topics, showing how these species, often provoking fear or fascination in contemporary society, help us better understand the biological diversity of vertebrates.
