研究の概要

雪や氷河が赤や緑などに彩られる「彩雪」現象は、世界各地の山岳地域や極域から報告されています。アリストテレスの動物誌や、ダーウィンのビーグル号航海記にも記述されているこの現象は、赤潮やアオコのように、微細な藻類が高密度に繁殖することで主に引き起こされます。

近年、彩雪によって雪や氷河の融解が促進されることが示唆されており、彩雪が地球環境に与える影響が注目されています。しかしながら、彩雪の原因となる藻類(氷雪藻; 雪氷藻、雪上藻とも)の実体については、ほとんど分かっていません。私は培養株と野外サンプルの比較解析に基づき、氷雪藻の種の実体と多様性の解明を進めています。
