Route Deliberate: Imported to Japan as pet animal in past. In UK, spread by illegal introduction by anglers. In some countries in Europe, used for food.
Impact Potentially: Competition with and predation on native aquatic animals. A congener S. vitreus have been spread and impact on native community in North America. Large impacts are also observed in W Europe and N Africa.
Native organism(s) affected: Freshwater fishes and invertebrates.
Regulation in Japan Import, transport and keeping are prohibited by the Invasive Alien Species Act.
