NIES and ITB sign Memorandum of Understanding for comprehensive research cooperation

MoU for comprehensive research cooperation with ITB

On August 26th 2015, National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Japan, and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB: Institut Teknologi Bandung), Indonesia, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for comprehensive research cooperation.
ITB, a top class research university in Indonesia, was founded in 1920. It housed the Technical Faculty (including a Fine Arts Department) of Universitas Indonesia in the early 1950s.  In March 1959, the Indonesian government established ITB as an autonomous institution for higher learning in science, technology, and fine arts, with the mission of ‘Creating, sharing and applying science, technology, arts and humanities as well as producing superior human resources and to make Indonesia a better world’.(cited from Website of ITB
The main campus of ITB is located in the city of Bandung, which lies in the mountainous area of West Java at an altitude of 770 meters, and has a population of around two million.
The signing ceremony was held at the Rector’s Office of ITB.  The MoU between NIES and ITB was signed by Prof. Dr. Akimasa Sumi, President of NIES and Prof. Dr. Kadarsah Suryadi , Rector of ITB. 
NIES and ITB had already established cooperation in various research fields, such as innovative technology on measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) system, and waste management. For the purpose of strengthening and enhancement of the ties between the two institutions, NIES and ITB agreed to sign the MoU.

The signing ceremony started with an introductory speech by both representatives to briefly introduce each institute. This was followed by a presentation by Prof. Tsuyoshi Fujita, Director of the Center for Social and Environmental Systems Research at NIES, on the topic, ‘International Collaboration toward Innovative Modeling and Monitoring Research for Eco-Cities and Eco-Industrial Developments’ which describes the main contents of collaboration.

International Research Workshop

Before the signing ceremony, a research workshop titled ‘International Research Workshop for Low Carbon City and Industry’ was organized on the ITB main campus. Researchers from NIES, ITB, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) made presentations on the topics of ‘MRV Development for Supporting Eco-Campus and Eco-City’, ‘MRV Development for Industrial Energy System’ and ‘Energy and Process Efficiency for Sustainable Industry Development’ and so forth.

On behalf of NIES researchers, Prof. Tsuyoshi Fujita, Director, and Dr Minoru Fujii, Senior Researcher, made presentations on the MRV research project which is currently being promoted in Indonesia in joint collaboration with ITB and IPB.

Around 100 people participated in the workshop, including faculty staff, students of ITB, and experts from private enterprise in Indonesia.
