Environmental Risk Field: Center for Environmental Risk Resarch

Environmental Risk Field

@What is environmental risk? It is the concerns about environmental factors which may adversely affect human health and ecosystems. Today, we are facing the global challenge of building a society in which environmental risks are reduced and peace of mind is assured. In the field of study for environmental risk, we focus our research on typical environmental factors; that is, chemical substances in the environment. At the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa, the world leaders agreed to act on a plan aimed at reducing the risks from the chemical substances so as to achieve, g by 2020, that chemicals are used and produced in ways that lead to the minimization of significant adverse effects on human health and the environmenth (WSSD2020 Goal). In response, Japan has started to promote action plans to ascertain the state of risk to human health and ecosystems and to eliminate major risks. In order to advance these action plans, it is essential for us to establish techniques which are useful for the evaluation of heretofore unidentified risks and the risks to vulnerable groups, and to implement more stringent controls to manage the environmental risks posed by these substances. To advance the evaluation and management of environmental risks, we will concentrate our comprehensive efforts in the field of environmental risk research on subjects such as: developing ecological impact assessment methods; developing techniques for predicting toxicity of chemical substances based on theoretical chemistry and information sciences; clarifying routes and dynamics of exposure to chemicals and developing exposure evaluation methods; developing techniques for ascertaining the state and effects of exposure to chemical substances in the environment; researching the mechanisms for assessing and developing methods for evaluating ecological risks; researching the mechanisms for evaluating the hazard and developing the methods for evaluation of health risks; research on policies and management relating to environmental risks; researching the risk communication; and gathering information relating to environmental risks.

@The Center for Environmental Risk Research will carry out a key research program ginnovation in evaluation and management of chemical substancesh to address immediate and priority issues, and research projects the gdevelopment of the infrastructure for environmental researchh which requires long-term effort, the gfundamental research to support environmental action plansh which takes policy needs into account, and the gfundamental researchh, as well as practical activities for the environmental risk assessment. We will also carry out cross-disciplinary research projects, including studies of issues on the earthquake.
