Brief Description of Research
In order to evaluate the potential of carbon sink and/or source of global forest ecosystems in the changing world, we executed following multi-approached experiments.
(1) Continuous measurement of soil respiration in the most important Asian terrestrial ecosystems, including the boreal forest in central Alaska, cool- and temperate-forests in Japan, Korea and China, and tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia.
(2) Conducting soil warming experiments in 6 typical forest ecosystems over Japan.
(3) Doing cross-country soil incubation by sampling soil cores from about 100 forest ecosystems over Japan.
(4) Understanding the decomposition mechanism of soil organic carbon in the changing world by measurement of 14C and soil microbes.
