Brief Description of Research
- Evaluation, Design, and Practices of 3Rs (reduce, reuse, and recycle) Schemes
I have been evaluating and designing recycling schemes and waste prevention (reduce and reuse) activities. The evaluation is multi-dimensional and focuses on three elements of recycling systems – material flow, monetary flow, and stakeholders. Approaches including responsibility, stakeholder analysis, and informative policy instruments are used as well to obtain insights for 3R policy design. Main achievements were published in reports such as evaluation of the Electrical Home Appliance Recycling Act in Japan, examination of collection systems with economic incentives (deposit-refund systems and reward points collection systems), and strategy and implementation for establishment of a local recycling system. I have also been conducting studies on upper law and its indicator system, and Waste Management Law. On-going research projects are estimation of the effectiveness of 3R policies with material flow models and adaptation of recycling/waste management systems to social changes such as population decrease.

- Environmental Product Policy (in context of sustainable production)
As a country is developed, the focus of environmental policy has been shifted or expanded from point sources of pollution to products. Environmental product policy aims to optimize environmental performances of a product system by understanding holistically all life stages of products, from production to consumption and waste disposal, that is, a product system and by applying policy instruments, such as environmental labeling which delivers information about environmental impacts beyond life stages of products and extended producer responsibility (EPR) which makes producers to engage in waste management in various ways. To do so, I have been analyzing/estimating product flows, investigating material management options, and surveying stakeholders’ perception of the concept of EPR.

- Concepts and Indicators of Sustainable Development
Activities about sustainable development (SD) have been moving from conceptual discussion to practices in the reality. By accumulating such practical wisdoms, I attempt to revisit the concept of SD. I also develop a new framework SD indicators that monitors country’s progresses for SD. Research outcomes include a review of more than 1800 SD indicators, development of an nexus-type indicator framework, and an investigation of sustainable procurement schemes to identify concrete operational criteria.

- Sustainable Lifestyle and Consumption
Although individual pro-environmental behaviors are important, individual power is not necessarily strong (For instance, a selected lifestyle restricts possible behaviors.) and situational factors enabling sustainable behaviors need .to be considered more for transition toward a sustainable society. My colleagues and I applied scenario approaches and idea generations methods to explore Japanese lifestyles in the future. We are progressing a research project to promote sustainable consumption and lifestyles in Asia focusing on energy-consuming home appliances.
