Introduction

 The National Institute for Environmental Studies, in collaboration with the municipal fire departments of Sapporo, Sendai, Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo, Yokohama, Kawasaki, Niigata, Shizuoka, Hamamatsu, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Sakai/Takaishi, Kobe, Hiroshima, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, Okinawa Prefecture, and Kusatsu (Shiga Prefecture), has posted on its homepage the latest data on incidences of heatstroke along with weather data (daily maximum temperatures: provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency on its HP) for the period from May 1 to September 30, 2007 (or from July 1 to August 31, 2007 for Sapporo and Sendai and June 1 to September 30 for Okinawa Prefecture).

 This report presents the statistical and analytical data on cases of heatstroke reported between May and September 2008 that required the patient to be transported by an ambulance. Part 1 summarizes the data for all 19 municipalities and 1 prefecture. Part 2 provides the detailed statistical and analytical data for each individual area. This report provides information intended to help municipalities and prefectures in planning their public health policies, and to educate ordinary citizens about heatstroke prevention.
