Introduction

The National Institute for Environmental Studies, in collaboration with the municipal fire departments of Sapporo, Sendai, Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo, Yokohama, Kawasaki, Niigata, Shizuoka, Hamamatsu, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Sakai/Takaishi, Kobe, Hiroshima, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, and Kusatsu, has posted on its homepage the latest data on incidences of heatstroke along with weather data (daily maximum temperatures) from the homepage of the Japan Meteorological Agency for the period from May 1 to September 30, 2007 (or from July 1 to August 31, 2007 for Sapporo and Sendai).

This report presents of the statistical and analytical data on cases of heatstroke reported between May and September 2007 that required the patient to be transported by an ambulance. Part 1 summarizes the overall data for all 19 cities. Part 2 provides the detailed statistical and analytical data for each individual city.This report provides information intended to help municipalities in planning their first-aid responses and to educate ordinary citizens about heatstroke prevention.
