International Cooperation (pamphlet)
NIES researchers are engaged in international collaborative research projects, involving activities such as fieldwork and environmental observation throughout the world. We participate in international conferences and meetings on environmental conservation and contribute to events as experts on environmental issues. In addition, NIES holds its own international meetings and workshops and acts as a focal point within the international environmental community. Furthermore, we host foreign researchers through fellowship programs, engage in international cooperation with agencies such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and proactively promote collaborative research projects with notable organizations through international research agreements.
Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC-COP)
In 2004, NIES was screened by UNFCCC-COP and admitted to the group as a non-governmental organization (NGO) observer. We have been participating as an observer to the Conferences of the Parties since December 2004 by providing an exhibit booth in the main venue and holding a side event. We use these opportunities to explain our research results to a wide audience.

Contributing to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is an international organization that synthesizes scientific knowledge on climate change and assesses impact and countermeasures.
number of NIES researchers contribute to IPCC reports as authors, and we cooperated with the IPCC by clarifying the climate change problem from a scientific perspective and assessing countermeasures as a part of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) published in 2007. IPCC reports summarize scientific knowledge on climate change and are currently considered the most authoritative source of information on this subject in the world. NIES publishes information on these reports to help promote understanding of the content.
Tripartite Meeting for Presidents of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese Environmental Research Institutes
For environmental research cooperation to succeed in the Asian region, it is necessary to forge links among Japan, Korea, and China. In February 2004, the presidents of NIES, the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES), and the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) in Korea decided to establish a tripartite presidents meeting in order to strengthen cooperation amongst the core environmental research institutes in these three countries. The fifth Tripartite Meeting was held in Japan in November 2008 and the presidents discussed the kinds of research projects that the three countries should work on together.
International Trainees and Observers
A large number of researchers, dignitaries, and government officials visit NIES every year to see the campus and to share opinions with our researchers.
We also cooperate with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in implementing their training programs.
International Conferences and Meetings, Dispatching Experts, Overseas Research Activities
NIES researchers are involved in a wide range of international activities. We host and participate in international conferences and meetings on environmental research, dispatch environmental research experts to developing regions, and undertake research projects in other countries.
