Contributions to Environmental Policy


NIES is a research organ which contributes to policy-forming, positively providing and disseminating the outcomes of its research in fitting with the development of environmental policy. In addition, NIES provides its accumulated expertise for policy-making and takes part in planning related documentation meetings, as well as being a conduit for the collection and control of all manner of information on the environment, research and technologies.

Japan Environment and Children’s Study

Ecochil Survey (National Survey on Children’s Health and the Environment)

Japan Environment and Children’s Study (JECS) is a nationwide initiative which has seen the participation of over 100,000 groups of parents and their children. It is a large scale survey aimed at clarifying the influence of substances found in their everyday environments on children’s health.

NIES is responsible fbr the implementation and administration of the survey.acting as the core center for promotion of the JECS. This survey can be expected to make a significant contribution to the development of forthcoming environmental policy.

Development of an official analysis method for PCB (Polychloride BiPhenyls)

We developed and applied a method for easily measuring dioxins which occur in minute levels along with PCBs, and contributed to the national policy by making it an official analysis method and helping in the drafting of its manual.

NIES, as the centre for putting together the biochemical analysis method and having established it as a General JIS Rule is actively playing a role in the identification of PCB waste


Collation, Management and Dissemination of Environmental Information

Collation, Management and Dissemination of Environmental Information

The Environmental Information Department collates and manages information relating to the environment and disseminates this information widely via media such as “Kankyo Tenbodai” (Environmental Observatory). Thanks to these efforts, awareness of environmental issues is not only increased but this information also serves as reference for initiatives by public and private bodies for the purpose of environmental protection.
