Notes

1. Of the monohydric alcohols, acids, sugars, and polyhydric alcohols tested, only even-number, straight-chain monovalent compounds supported growth of Chilomonas in a salt-thiamin basal medium. 2. These utilizable compounds were all equally satisfactory carbon sources. 3. All the odd-number, straight-chain monovalent compounds above C1 inhibited growth on these carbon sources, decreasing the maximum population and increasing the initial lag and mean generation time. 4. The other compounds tested were without effect. 5. A working hypothesis based on these results is suggested.
