Notes

Examination of the internal dividing wall of specimens attributed to the genus Pontigulasia have shown that two clearly defined structures are present. The first is a thin connection between the lateral walls, called a bridge, which is sometimes difficult to see in cursory observations; the second is a continuation of the shell wall and is a much more robust structure seen as a thick band across the shell and is called a diaphragm, this latter structure has one or two well defined openings. The difference between these two dividing structures has been used to distinguish between the genera Pontigulasia Rhumbler and Zivkovicia gen. nov. Five species are redescribed from investigations of recent specimens, and a review of the known species of Pontigulasia is given.
