Notes

The population of Naegleria fowleri was studied in the thermal effluents of three metallurgical factories and the surrounding water from August 1976 to August 1977. Pathogenic N. fowleri were present in winter as well as in summer. The results of the filtration method used, indicated that treating small samples (1 and 10 ml) is more favorable for the isolation of pathogens since in larger samples (100 to 250 ml) the chance of overgrowth by nonpathogens is increased. Two concentration methods for large samples which will prevent overgrowth of the pathogenic Naegleria were also compared.
