Notes

To investigate the role of micronuclei in E. patella, the nuclei were removed from vegetative cells and exconjugants by micro-suction. In vegetative cells, the macronuclei became visibly aberrant. All of the cells died in a short time. In exconjugants, the macronuclear anlagen developed normally and elongated into rod-like anlagen. After elongation, however, they also degenerated, and all of the exconjugants died out. These results suggest that micronuclei are necessary for the continued functions of macronuclei and macronuclear anlagen.
