Notes

A large, multinucleate amoeba, Chaos zoochlorellae Willumsen, 1982 has been collected at diverse localities in Europe. No essential variations were found by light microscopic comparison. Electron microscopic studies showed an amorphous cell coat and no internal nuclear lamina. These findings contrast with the three other known Chaos species, in all of which a cell coat with discrete radiating filaments has been found, and in two of which the inner nuclear lamina is known to have a honeycomb-like structure. Division of the genus Chaos into Chaos and Parachaos, with P. zoochlorellae as the type species of the latter genus is proposed.
