Notes

Some nomenclatural rectifications and new combinations in the phylum Ciliophora are suggested. In addition, the correct date and citation of the genera Coleps, Gastronauta, Pseudoprorodon, and Steinia and of the species Epistylis entzii, Kahliella microstoma, Oxytricha buitkampi, Plagiotoma lumbrici, Stokesia vernalis, and Trithigmostoma cucullulus are given. Furthermore, the widely overlooked papers of Schmarda (1846, 1850, 1854) and Kaltenbach (1960) which contain the description of some new ciliate species are revived. The genera Urotrichopsis, Patschia, Oldesloeria, and Mimeticus fall as junior synonyms of Dissothigma and Pleurofragma, because they have the same type species. Alinostoma Jankowski, 1980 is probably synonymous with Pseudochilodonopsis Foissner, 1979. Special problems cause the nassulid genera Nassula, Obertrumia, Zosterograptus, Naxella, and Rhinakis. Zosterograptus is regarded as invalid, because no type species has been designated. Rhinakis is a nomen nudum, because the type species is still undescribed. The following new names are introduced to replace some homonyms: Frontonia magnistoma, Oxytricha fromenteli, O. alfredkahli, O. germanica, and Vorticella hamatella. Kerona polyporum Ehrenberg, 1835 and Strombidium gyrans Stokes, 1887 are considered to be junior synonyms of Kerona pediculus (O.F. Muller, 1773) and Strombidium caudatum (Fromentel, 1874), respectively. A new species, Zoothamnium asellicola, is proposed for the Carchesium pygmeum Ehrenberg of D'Udekem (1864). The genus Stephanidina and the species names Bursaria spirigera, Stentor aureus, and Bracionus stentoreus var. viridis, which have priority over Askenasia, Spirostomum virens (Climacostomum virens), Stentor igneus, and Vorticella polymorpha (Stentor polymorphus), are suggested as nomina oblita.
