Notes

Stentor barretti, which was isolated from the River Tillingbourne, Surrey, England, is described for the first time in over 100 years. It exhibits 5 main characters by which it may be distinguished from other species of Stentor; (i) a bilobate frontal field, (ii) sensory cilia around the edge of the frontal field, (iii) a sinous and elongate macronucleus with several constrictions along its length, (iv) a special organelle, the attachment cord, by which the animal is anchored to the substrate, and (v) a highly elongated, cylindrical lorica. It is proposed that S. barretti should once again be recognised as a separate species.
