Notes

Ciliated protozoa of the Suborder Oligotrichina are widely distributed and are numerically the most important component of the microzooplankton community in the aquatic environment. This group is difficult to preserve routinely, and as a result they are poorly known taxonomically. The Suborder Oligotrichina includes 3 Families, Halteriidae, Strombidiidae and Strobilidiidae. The species of the Family Strombidiidae have been reviewed previously (Maeda and Carey, 1985). Here in order to complete the species list of the Suborder Oligotrichina, all the original descriptions and diagrams of the species belonging to the Families Halteriidae and Strobilidiidae have been checked. Among these, 54 species and 42 synonyms including 11 species with new names are considered to belong to these two families and their taxonomic features are described in detail.
