Notes

For the present research twenty specimens of Philodina roseola Ehr., all offspring from one individual, have been bred at 24 degrees C. The culture medium is composed of distilled water to which was added commercial trout food. Each specimen was isolated in a small glass dish (about 2 ml) and fed daily. Each rotifer was daily checked, and the daughters were counted and taken off after birth. From our results the average span life seems to be 42.05 days: the preriproductive period was 4 days long, the reproductive one was 28.7 long, while the senescence lasted 9.3 days. Each individual produces, during its life, an average of 55 daughters, i.e. about 2 daughters a day along the reproduction period. The plot of the survival percentage is fairly linear.
