A morphological classification of the shells of Rhizopoda Testacea is proposed. This classification takes into account convergencies of shape. Factor Analysis of various populations shows that the distribution of types (morphotypical profiles) is closely related to the water availability. In each phylum, the evolution of the shell is characterized by a trend to bilateral symmetry and to differentiation of a vestibule (anagenesis), external in aquatic phyla, internal in edaphic phyla. These trends are modulated by many adaptive processes (cladogenesis).
