Notes

In a little brook, called Ammerbach, near Jena (GDR, Thuringia), the density, biomass, production, number of generations, ingestion, and carbon-balance of ciliated protozoa were investigated. 8.4 g biomass/m2/a (=421.9 mgC) were produced. P/B amounted to 195. The association of Ciliate consumed 14.8 g biomass to m2/a (=741.5 mgC) of bacteria, diatoms and other protozoa. The maximal number of annual generations shows Tachysoma pellionella: 82 in 17 phases of production. The measured balance shows 42.5% respiration and egestion. With the help of values from culture-populations the measured balance were corrected.
