Notes

Many marine planktonic ciliates exist but few have been described adequately. We recommend methods for identifying and describing ciliates in the subclass Choreotrichia. These are primarily based on protargol silver-stained specimens. Diagnoses are given for the following groups in the Choreotrichia: 1. within the order Choreotrichida: suborder Tintinnina; suborder Strombidinopsina, family Strombidinopsidae; suborder Strobilidiina, Family Strobilidiidae; incertae sedis in the Choreotrichida; family Leefaardiellidae, family Lohmanniellidae. 2. within the order Oligotrichida: family Halteriidae; family Strombidiidae. We present a brief and speculative phylogeny.
