Descriptions

Bathydrilus litoreus Baker, 1983 (ref. ID; 7208 original paper)

Descriptions

Length 9-13 mm, 82-94 segments, diameter at clitellum 300-430 µm (in fixed, whole-mounted, slightly compressed sexually mature specimens). Prostomium about as long as broad at peristomium, bluntly conical, usually with small papilla on tip. Pharyngeal glands from (III)IV to VIII(IX). Clitellum over XI-XII, thin over XI, very thick ventrally in XII; X usually without noticeably thickened clitellum but with thickened ventral epidermal pads medially. From VIII posteriorly each segment (usually) possesses a patch of glandular (?) epithelium between the dorsal setal bundles. Somatic setae bifid, 3 per bundle anteriorly, 2 per bundle posteriorly; all with upper tooth shorter and thinner than lower, upper tooth reduced posteriorly. Ventral setae of XI modified as penial setae, each bundle contains 2 (3-5) large simple-pointed penial setae (rarely bifid) with slightly curved narrow ectal tips, tips usually with a slight keel along one edge. Penial setae from 7.2 to 9.2 µm thick, 140-160 µm long. Penial setal bundles enclosed in large muscular sac, sac bilobed around penial setae. Penial setae protrude from a pair of ventral papillae anterior to the male pores, setae directed towards mid-ventral line of body. Male pores paired posteriorly in XI, in ventral setal line on papillae; spermathecal pores paired in X at 9/10, in lateral line. Anus terminal. (ref. ID; 7208)
  • Male genitalia: vas deferens ciliated, inconspicuous, 9.5-12.0 µm in diameter, approximately 280-330 µm long, joining atrium slightly ectally; vas deferens runs under muscle layer of atrium to empty into the atrial lumen apically. Atrium more or less spindle shaped with ciliated lumen, 170-230 µm long, 65-80 µm wide, muscle layer over atrium 1.2-3.0 µm thick. Atrium bipartite with lightly staining very granular cells apical to the entrance of the vas deferens and darker staining, less granular cells basal to the entrance of the vas deferens; atrium narrowing ecatlly to form atrial duct, opening of duct on anterior face of large papilla, may be partially covered by fold of body wall. Atrium with two stalked prostate glands, anterior prostate entering atrium just above entrance of vas deferens, posterior prostate entering posterior face of atrium slightly subapically; posterior part of atrium and posterior prostate usually lie in XII. Spermathecae paired, each with short duct and sacciform ampulla with thick walls; often one or both ampullae extend into IX. Sperm in globular or semi-globular spermatophores. (ref. ID; 7208)

    Remarks

In one specimen of B. litoreus from the type locality there were five penial setae in one bundle and none in the other. Specimens from Chatham Island, Victoria (southern tip of Vancouver Island) have as many as four penial setae per bundle. In one specimen the penial setae in one bundle are bifid. Specimens from Botanical Beach (southwest coast of Vancouver Island) generally have a thicker clitellum than the Queen Charlotte specimens. However, in all specimens the spermathecae and male system are clearly of the same form as in B. litoreus. (ref. ID; 7208)

    Etymology

From the Latin litus, shore; after the intertidal habitat of this species; of the seashore. (ref. ID; 7208)

    Habitat

Mid- to very low-intertidal habitats, silty to coarse sands with or without shell debris, with varying degrees of organic matter present, usually of noticeable freshwater flow near or over. (ref. ID; 7208)

    Type locality

Sperm Bay, Flamingo Inlet, Moresby Island, Queen Charlotte Islands, 52 degrees 13.2'N, 131 degrees 20.6'W. At upper edge of Zostera marina bed, sediment silty with shell debris, very low intertidal. Eggs cases of Pollinices lewisii (a gastropod mollusc) abundant; Haliotis kamchatkana (a gastropod mollusc) present. Collected May 17, 1980 by H.R. Baker and K.A. Coates. (ref. ID; 7208)

Bathydrilus torosus Baker, 1983 (ref. ID; 7208 original paper)

    Descriptions

Length 6.7 mm and 49 segments, 9.4 mm and 52 segments (in the two complete specimens); diameter at clitellum 180-250 µm (in fixed, whole-mounted, slightly compressed sexually mature specimens). Prostomium bluntly conical, about as long as broad at peristomium. Pharyngeal glands inconspicuos, from (III)IV to VI. Clitellum from 9/10 to 1/2 XII; no thickened ventrolateral epidermal pads in X. Somatic setae bifid, (2) 3 per bundle anteriorly, from (VII)VIII posteriad 2 (3) per bundle; all with upper tooth thinner and much shorter than lower, upper tooth very reduced from (VII)VIII posteriad, lower tooth becomes blunter. Dorsal setae of XI present, ventral setae of XI absent, modified genital setae absent. Male pores paired medially in XI on papillae, in ventral setal line, in line with the dorsal setae; spermathecal pores paired in X at 9/10, near lateral line. Anus subterminal. (ref. ID; 7208)
  • Male genitalia: vas deferens ciliated, inconspicuous, approximately 10 µm thick, approximately 170 µm long, joining ectal end of atrium. Atrium more or less spindle shaped, 180-250 µm long, 42-70 µm wide, muscle layer over atrium 6-10 µm thick. Atrium bipartite with the ental two-thirds of the atrial cells less granular than the ectal one-third. Atrium narrowing ectally to form atrial duct; opening of duct on ventral aspect of large papilla. Atrium with two stalked prostate glands, anterior prostate entering atrium just above entrance of vas deferens, posterior prostate entering atrium apically; posterior prostate and posterior part of atrium may lie in XII. Spermathecae paired, each elongate with thick walls; one or both ampullae may extend into IX or XI. Sperm as roundish spermatophores. (ref. ID; 7208)

    Remarks

The upper teeth of the posterior setae are very reduced but are not lost entirely. The very thick atrial muscle layer and lack of penial setae effectively separates B. torosus from B. litoreus. The atrial duct in B. litoreus is also shorter than that of B. torosus. (ref. ID; 7208)

    Etymology

From the Latin torosus, muscular, lusty; after the very muscular atria. (ref. ID; 7208)

    Habitat

Low-intertidal organically enriched sands. (ref. ID; 7208)

    Type locality

Botanical Beach, Vancouver Island, 48 degrees 31.5'N, 124 degrees 26.1'W. Low intertidal, medium-coarse sands with silts and organic debris, in Zostera marina bed in surge channel, between rocks covered with Hedophyllum sessile. Collected May 26, 1982 by H.R. Baker and K.A. Coates. (ref. ID; 7208)
