Descriptions

Body stout, head diameter 16-17 µm, diameter at the end of the esophagus 30-36 µm, maximal body diameter in midbody region 35-45 µm, anal body diameter in males 26-30 µm, in females 21-24 µm. Cuticle thin, less than 1 µm thick, finely annulated, annules begin about 5 µm from the anterior end and continue to about 15 µm from the tip of the tail. Head with two circles of 6 minute papillae (the inner circle could not be seen in all cases), 4 cephalic setae, 8 µm (0.47-0.5 head diameter) long. Two circles of 8 short (5 µm) subcephalic setae in a distance of 15 and 20 µm from the anterior end, followed by the first circle of long somatic setae, which are 20-22 µm in the esophageal region and 15-18 µm throughout the rest of the body, forming 8 longitudinal rows. Between the long somatic setae short (4-5 µm) bristles are interspersed. Amphids circular spiral with one turn, diameter 7 µm (41-43% of c.b.d.) in males, 6-6.5 µm (37-40% of c.b.d.) in females. They are situated between the cephalic setae, their anterior edge 2-4 µm from the anterior end. Stoma small, cupshaped, with 12 rugae; dorsal tooth small, 2 minute subventral teeth could be seen in some specimens; esophagus 85-100 µm long, with a round to diamond shaped bulb approximately 25 µm long and wide, with a plasmatic break. Intestine starts with a narrow portion devoid of granules, which seems to be a cardia. A large nerve ring surrounds the last 10 µm of the straight part of the esophagus. Excretory pore and ventral gland could not be observed. Tail conical, 83-90 µm (2.8-3.5 anal body diameters) in males, 76-88 µm (3.2-3.8 a.b.d.) in females. Three postanal caudal glands which open through an elaborate spinneret. Last 15 µm of tail devoid of annulation. Male with single outstretched testis, beginning at about 30% of body length; spicula arcuate, strongly cephalate proximally, 50-55 µm (2 anal body diameters) long measured along arch, 38-40 µm (1.5 a.b.d.) measured along chord; gubernaculum weak, with dorsal, hook shaped apophysis. Females didelphic, gonades reflexed extending 100-140 µm forward and backward; vulva at 47-50% of body length; egg in uterus measures 70x40 µm. (ref. ID; 7627)

Remarks

From the three other species of Spirinia (S.) characterized by long somatic setae the new species is distinguished by much smaller size, furthermore from S. laevis (Bastian, 1865) by the occurence of long somatic setae all over the body and the longer tail (2.8-3.8 compared to 1.5 a.b.d.), from S. gerlachi (Luc & De Coninck, 1959) by the absolutely and relatively shorter somatic setae, the smaller amphid (41-43 compared to 54% of c.b.d.), the shorter tail and the shape of the spicules, from S. laevioides Gerlach, 1963 by the longer somatic setae in the neck region, the absence of subcepharic setae anterior to the cephalic setae, the shorter cephalic setae and the shape of spicules and gubernaculum.
