Parabutlerius

Family Diplogasteridae (ref. ID; 7813)

Notes

The genus Parabutlerius was proposed by Ebsary (1986) for the monodelphic Butlerius species B. monhystera (type), B. macrospiculum, and B. degrissei. Unknown to me at the time, Andrassy (1984) had proposed the genus Monobutlerius for the same three species, with the same type species. Parabutlerius is herewith formally synonymized with Monobutlerius, becoming a junior objective synonym. (ref. ID; 5831)

Diagnosis

Head continuous with body. Lips 6, each with a single seta in the female, male with 4 additional setae dorsally and ventrally. Cheilstom longer than wide, aperture divided by rugae into 6 or 12 membranous mobile plates. Dorsal metarhabdion with a prominent mobile tooth. Left subventral metarhabdion with a single tooth or denticulate plates. Telostom as long as wide. Esophagus with a valvate median bulb strongly set off from the isthmus and basal bulb. Ovary one, prodelphic, reflexed. Postuterine sac present, serving as a spermatheca, connected to vagina by either a noncuticularized or strongly cuticularized duct with or without a diverticulum (see Grootaert and Jaques 1979, Hunt 1983, and Taylor 1964 for pertinent diagnostic figures). Males with a single reflexed testis. Bursa absent. Caudal papillae 9 consisting of 3 pairs adanal and 6 pairs postanal. Gubernaculum with a triangular or rounded keel. Spicules cephalated. Tail long, filiform in both sexes. Bisexual species. (ref. ID; 7813)

Differential diagnosis

Species of Parabutlerius n. gen. are most similar to those of Butlerius but are readily differentiated by the single ovary and posterior vulval sac that acts as a spermatheca and by the gubernaculum in the males that is triangular or keel-like. (ref. ID; 7813)
