Neocrossonema

Neocrossonema Ebsary, 1980 (ref. ID; 5848 original paper)

ref. ID; 5848

Diagnosis

Female body 0.29-0.69 mm. Annules 51-93, each with fringe of 40-70 spines at midbody. Head annules two, set off, smooth, crenate or spined. Lip region elevated, round. Stylet 69-125 µm. Vulval lips conical reaching spine contour. Tail 8-16 annules, conical pointed, VL/VB 1.8-2.0. (ref. ID; 5848)
  • Juveniles (fourth stage): Annules with 11-13 rows of semicircular scales and subcylindrical posterior extension tipped with fine, sharp spines. Male with stylet. (ref. ID; 5848)
  • Male: Lateral incisures three, bursa small, spicules 37-59 µm. (ref. ID; 5848)

    Note

Neocrossonema n. gen. differs from Crossonema by having undifferentiated body spines, a conical pointed tail of 8-16 annules, Vl/VB 1.8-2.0, vulval lips protruding to body spine contour, unmodified tail spines and by the juveniles which have 11-13 longitudinal rows of semicircular scales with subcylindrical, finely spined posterior extension. Crossonema typically has at least some body spines or scales modified into bifurcated, knobbed, clubbed or similar structures, a rounded tail of three to eight annules, VL/VB 0.8-1.1, vulval lips withdrawn from spine-scale contour, modified tail spines, scales which are distinctly longer ventrally around vulva and the juveniles which have eight longitudinal rows of broad flattened, semicircular protuberances with four to six prominent conical spines. Neocrossonema is very similar to Seriespinula but differs by continuous fringes of body annule spines. Seriespinula has 8-16 longitudinal rows of spines which are subdivided into groups of up to 4.
