Microlaimus capillaris Gerlach, 1957 (ref. ID; 1761, 3571)

Diagnosis

M. capillaris is separated from other Microlaimus species by its asymmetrical copulatory apparatus: a long and slender left spiculum, and parallel to that a short right spiculum with an accompanying gubernaculum. Gerlach, however, described and depicted only the long left spiculum and likely overlooked the shorter right spiculum. M. acicularis Lorenzen, 1976 is the only Microlaimus species with paired, long and slender spicules. Gerlach also noted that the single, reflexed testis appeared as an ovary; observations of present materials confirm that, concluding that the anterior testis -normally left of the intestine in Microlaimus- is not developed in M. capillaris. A single, reflexed testis is a unique feature within Microlaimidae and has rarely been reported in free-living aquatic nematode; this is herein judged as a specific character for M. capillaris. (ref. ID; 1761)

Descriptions

This species found from a mangrove mud-flat in the Clyde River estuary, NSW, Australia. (ref. ID; 1761)
  • Male: Body cylindrical with elongate-conoid tail. Cuticle annulated, annules being 1-1.5 µm wide. Somatic setae 1-2 µm long and very few in numbers. Amphids are open circles, 3-4 µm in diameter, situated 7-10 µm behind front end. Six small papillae at front end and four cephalic setae 2 µm long located 3 µm behind front end. Buccal cavity with a small pointed dorsal tooth and two subventral teeth; ventral sector with three pouches. Oesophagus cylindrical, posteriorly enlarged; cardia small and surrounded by intestine. Ventral gland cell and pore opening not observed. Only one testis observed, reflexed and right of intestine and right of vas deferens. Copulatory apparatus asymmetrical; right spicule slightly bent, 33-41 µm along chord, left spicule very slender with a loop distally, 91-102 µm long. Gubernaculum slightly bent, 15-17 µm long. No preanal supplements observed. No caudal gland cells observed. Spinneret sclerotized. (ref. ID; 1761)
  • Female: Similar to males in most respects. Body widest at vulva. Vagina slightly sclerotized; ovaries opposite and outstretched, anterior ovary left of intestine, posterior ovary right of intestine. (ref. ID; 1761)
