Differential diagnosis

See diagnosis of Koerneria terranovus n. sp. Koerneria bicornis (Rahm, 1929) Goodey, 1963 is placed in species inquirenda due to the lack of sufficient information concerning the cheilostom-telostom region and its associated armature. The hornlike structures on the head appear to be an artifact derived from everted cheilorhabdions and should not be considered diagnostic for this species. (ref. ID; 7250)

Descriptions

  • Female: Female body slightly curved ventrally. Head continuous with body. Cephalic setae 5-6 µm long. Cuticle near head appearing punctate, posteriorly forming 28-30 transversely striated longitudinal ridges running the length of the body. Subcuticle of ridges with two pairs of punctations in a four corner arrangement. Cheilostom aperture 50% of head width ringed with 12 membranous cheilorhabdial derived plates, extending beyond head apex. Encircling the cheilostom and pro- and meso-rhabdions are the rib or stavelike cheilorhabdions which form a basket-like arrangement in the cheilostom. Each of the 12 cheilorhabdion plates marked by four stavelike ribs. Dorsal and ventral cheilorhabdions in lateral view appear isosceles triangle shaped. Dorsal metarhabdion with a movable clawlike tooth. Right subventral metrahabdion with a hooklike tooth. Left subventral metarhabdion with a rasplike plate. Cheilostom 5-7 µm long by 8-9 µm long by 8-9 µm wide. Telostom funnel shaped with 2 small subventral teeth measuring 1.5 µm. Amphid at level of dorsal tooth, 50% of corresponding head width. Muscular procorpus surrounding telostom. Procorpus expands into the muscular metacorpus which is slightly expanded into a bulb 158(137-180) µm from head. Isthmus and basal bulb weakly muscular, 111(94-144) µm long. Excretory pore 46(40-58) µm from metacorpus at 43% (33-51) of isthmus. Ovaries opposed, reflexed. Vulva a pore. Vagina weakly sclerotized. Uterus weakly muscular. Rectum about 2 anal body widths long. Phasmids not observed. Tail elongate filiform 241(216-274) µm long. (ref. ID; 7250)
  • Male: Similar to female. Cephalic setae 3-3.5 µm. Testis single, reflexed. Spicule head slightly handlelike. Gubernaculum slightly expanded proximally. Caudal papillae 1 pair adanal, 6 pairs post anal. Tail 156 µm long, filiform. (ref. ID; 7250)

    Type locality and habitat

Collected July 1967 by Mr. R.H. Mulvey, for whom the species is named, from lilies and moss growing on Sable Island, off the coast of Nova Scotia. (ref. ID; 7250)

    Measurements

  • Holotype (female): L=1627 µm, a=63, b=6.1, c=5.9, c'=18, V=50. (ref. ID; 7250)
  • Paratypes (5 females): L=1560(1377-1678) µm, a=61(53-68), b=5.8(5.3-6.1), c=7.2(5.9-7.7), c'=14(10-18), V=50(49.5-52). (ref. ID; 7250)

Koerneria terranovus Ebsary, 1986 (ref. ID; 7250 original paper)

    Differential diagnosis

Koerneria terranovus n. sp. and K. mulveyi n. sp. are unique among Koerneria species because of the large a values, which are at least two those of any other known Koerneria species. Koerneria terranovus n. sp. is most similar to Koerneria mulveyi n. sp. but differs by the narrower cheilostom aperture (30% vs. 50% of head width), longer body (1735-1771 µm vs. 1377-1678 µm), smaller c' value (11-12 vs. 14(10-18)), shorter cephalic setae (3-3.5 vs. 5-6 µm), and by linear cheilorhabdions vesus triangular cheilorhabdions in K. mulveyi. Also the K. terranovus males have cephalic setae like the females, while males of K. mulveyi have cephalic setae one half the length of the female (3-3.5 µm vs. 5-6 µm) long. The gubernaculum is also shorter (11 vs. 14 µm) and the spicules have a more pronounced handlelike manubrium. (ref. ID; 7250)

    Descriptions

  • Female: Head coninuous with body, cephalic setae 3-3.5 µm long. Cuticle near head appearing punctate, changing slightly posterior to head into 30 longitudinal rows of transversly striated ridges, running length of body, each subtended by 2 rows of punctations in four corner arrangement on each annule. Cheilostom aperture about one third head width, ringed by 12 membranous cheilorhabdion derived mobile plates which protrude beyond head apex. Cheilostom urn-shaped 6-7 µm long by 7-9 µm wide. Cheilorhabdions curvilinear, with a slight medial process. Encircling cheilstom and pro- and meso-rhabdions are the cheilorhabdions which form a series of riblike longitudinal striations, four per cheilorhabdion plate. Dorsal metarhabdion tooth clawlike, left subventral metarhabdion with a rasplike plate, the right subventral metarhabdion with a hooklike tooth. Telostom funnel-shaped with 2 subventral teeth 1.5 µm long. Amphid slitlike at level of dorsal tooth, 50% of corresponding head width. Procorpus muscular surrounding telostom to base of dorsal metarhabdion. Metacorpus slightly expanded 165(151-175) µm from head, containing a valvelike structure. Isthmus and post corpus weakly muscular, 112(108-115) µm long. Excretory pore 45-52 µm posterior to base of metacorpus, at 40-47% of isthmus length. Vulva a pore, vagina lightly sclerotized. Ovaries opposed, reflexed. Rectum two anal body widths long. Tail elongate, conical, 223-240 µm long. (ref. ID; 7250)
  • Male: Similar to female except for the following. Testis single, outstretched. Spicules with a handlelike head, gubernaculum curvilinear. Caudal setae consisting of one pair adanal and 6 pairs post anal. Excretory pore 53-63 µm posterior to metacorpus, at 54-60% of 98-105 µm long isthmus and basal bulb, and tail 158-200 µm. (ref. ID; 7250)
