Descriptions

  • Female: Body assumes a ventrally arcuate posture when relaxed by gentle heat, taperign towards the extremities, abruptly narrowing at vulva. Cuticle apparently smooth. Lip region rounded in front with a slight depression at the oral opening, continuous with the body contour. Buccal spear 9 to 11.5 µm long. Basal knobs rounded about 2.5 µm across. Dorsal oesophageal gland opening 2.3 µm behind from spear base. Oesophagus irregularly cylindrical, difficult to locate throughout its length; terminating in a lobe, overlapping the intestine. Nerve ring enveloping the oesophagus near its middle. Excretory pore indistinct. Vulva a transverse slit with an anterior overlapping of cuticle. Vagina inclined anteriorly, extending about half way across the body. Post-uterine sac about one vulvar body-width long. Ovary single, outstretched anteriorly. Oocytes arranged in a single row except near the tip. Spermatheca distinct filled with rounded sperms. Tail 80 to 126 µm long, 15 to 20 times as long as anal body-width, terminating in a finely rounded terminus. (ref. ID; 7633)
  • Male: Body similar to that of female. Testis single, outstretched anteriorly. Spermatocytes arranged in a single row. Spicules paired, cephalated, slightly curved 19 to 22 µm long. Gubernaculum could not be seen. Bursa consisting of broadly rounded flaps. (ref. ID; 7633)

    Remarks

Ecphyadophora basiri n. sp. comes close to E. tenuissima de Man, 1921 and E. tritici n. sp. It differs from E. tenuissima in having a stouter body and shorter post-uterine sac in females and longer spicules in males. (Female: a=96 to 197, post-uterine sac 2 times as long as vulvar body width. Male: spicules=13 to 16 µm long in E. tenuissima). From E. tritici it differs in having a shorter body; shorter post-uterine sac and differently shaped tail terminus (L=0.73 to 0.81 mm, post-uterine sac 1+1/4 to 1+1/2 times as long as vulvar body-width; tail terminus sub-acute in E. tritici). (ref. ID; 7633)

    Type habitat and locality

Collected from soil around roots of Jowar (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) at Dhara Nagar Village in district Farrukhabad (U.P.), India. (ref. ID; 7633)

    Type specimen

Collected by the author, holotype female and other paratypes deposited in Zoology Museum of Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh (U.P.), India. (ref. ID; 7633)

    Measurements

  • Holotype (female): L=0.63 mm, a=90, b=5.3, c=8.0, V=69. Spear 10 µm. (ref. ID; 7633)
  • Females (5): L=0.62-0.74 mm, a=76-106, b=5.3-6.4, c=5.0-8.0, V=67-73. (ref. ID; 7633)
  • Males (2): L=0.74-0.86 mm, a=93-122, b=4.6-5.7, c=8.7-9.9. (ref. ID; 7633)

Ecphyadophora tritici Verma, 1972 (ref. ID; 7633 original paper)

    Descriptions

  • Female: Body assumes a ventrally arcuate posture when relaxed by gentle heat, tapering towards either extremities, abruptly narrowing at vulva. Body cuticle apparently smooth. Head rounded in front, with a slight depression near the oral opening, continuous with body contour. Lip region without distinct sclerotization. Spear 8 to 10 µm long, with distinct basal knobs about 3 µm across. Dorsal oesophageal gland opening about 3 µm behind spear base. Oesophagus irregularly cylindrical, terminating in a lobe overlaping the intestine. Nerve ring enveloping the oesophagus near its middle. Vulva a transverse slit with an anterior overlapping of the cuticle, vagina inclinded anteriorly aroud half way across the body. Ovary single, outstretched anteriorly. Oocytes arranged in a single row. Spermatheca distinct, oval in shape, filled with sperms. Post-uterine sac 1+1/4 to 1+1/2 vulvar body-widths long. Vulva-anus distance 24 to 25 anal body widths long. Tail 81 to 90 µm long, 15 to 16 times as long as anal body-width, tapering gradually to a subacute terminus. (ref. ID; 7633)
  • Male: Similar to that of female. Reproductive organs typical of the genus. Spicules paired, slender, cephalated, slightly curved, 18 to 19 µm long. Gubernaculum slightly curved, 5 to 6 µm long. Bursa in the form of rounded flaps enclosing the cloaca. Tail 80 to 88 µm long, about 13 times as long as cloacal body-width ending in a sub-acute terminus. (ref. ID; 7633)

    Remarks

Ecphyadophora tritici n. sp. comes close to E. quadralata Corbett, 1964 and E. goodeyi Husain and Khan, 1965. It differs from E. quadralata in having longer and stouter body with smooth cuticle, longer spear, longer tail and vulva-anus distance being only 1+1/2 times as long as of tail (L=0.64 to 0.74 mm, a=93 to 107, body cuticle transversely striated, spear 6.0 to 7.5 µm long, a tail 13 anal body-widths long, vulva anus distance 2 times as long as tail in E. quadralata). From E. goodeyi it differs in having longer body, a longer tail in both the sexes and longer spicules in male. (Female: L=0.5 to 0.61 mm, c=12.8 to 13.1. Male: L=0.64 to 0.69 mm, c=18.7 to 13.1, spicules 9 to 10 µm long in E. goodeyi). (ref. ID; 7633)
