    Notes

The genus Acrozostron is considered herein as a synonym of Discocriconemella. Acrozostron was stated to differ from Discocriconemella by the large amphid apertures, Discocriconemella having small amphids. Acrozostron pannosa, A. hengsungica, and A. macramphidia as described by Luc (1970) and Sauer and Winoto (1975) respectively have small apertures. DeGrisse (1977) showed that D. limitanea, the type species of Discocriconemella, also has large amphid apertures. Acrozostron was also stated to have hyaline areas around the head but these are absent in A. pannosa and A. macramphidia and were not mentioned in A. hengsungica by Choi and Geraert (1975). Amphid aperture size and the hyaline nature of the head clearly overlaps between both genera and are of little taxonomic value. Stylet rigidity or flexibility and stylet length is also insufficient for separation of Acrozostron from Discocriconemella due to overlap of the characters between the two genera. The head disc structure of Acrozostron species does form a species group, but this group should be considered within Discocriconemella and not as generically distinct. Discocriconemella barberi cannot be distinguished from D. limitanea (see Loof and Sharma 1980) on the basis of stylet length, number of annules, vulva position, and other characters and is therefore synonymized with D. limitanea.
