Pfiesteria is the only genus of estuarine or toxic dinoflagellates that is known to have a complex life cycle including flagellated and amoeboid forms (Bursa 1970; Williams 1993; Steidinger et al. 1996). (ref. ID; 7402)

Remarks

P. piscicida was first observed in 1988 as a culture contaminant of unknown origin. It was subsequently dicovered in natural habitat during 1991 when swarming cells were collected from a "sudden-death" fish kill involving about one million finfish in the Pamlico Estuary, NC, USA ((Burkholder et al. 1992).
