Caecitellus

Caecitellus Patterson et al., 1993 (ref. ID; 6733)

[ref. ID; 5694]
Circumscription; Biflagellated gliding protist, heterotrophic, one flagellum projecting anteriorly, one trailing, with a posterio-lateral ingestion apparatus. Argued by some to be related bicosoecids. (ref. ID; 5694)
Ultrastructural identity; Tubulocristate mitochondria, two flagella giving rise to four microtubule roots; no hairs, scales, or other excrescences attached to flagella or cells surface. One of two studies shows osmiophilic structures in support of a mouth linked to roots arising from the basal bodies. (ref. ID; 5694)
Synapomorphy; As yet unspecified but probably will relate to the structure of the feeding apparatus. (ref. ID; 5694)
Composition; One species, Caecitellus parvulus. (ref. ID; 5694)
References; Patterson and Zolffel 1991; Patterson et al. 1993; O'Kelly and Nerad 1998. (ref. ID; 5694)

Caecitellus parvulus (Griessmann, 1913) Patterson, Nygaard, Steinberg & Turley 1993 (ref. ID; 4872 Protista Incertae sedis)

Descriptions

Gliding with the anterior flagellum sweeping stiffly in a small angle, posterior flagellum trailing and the cell vibrating sideways rapidly. (ref. ID; 4872)

Remarks

Appearance consistent with descriptions in Patterson et al. (1993) and Larsen & Patterson (1990) where it is described under the name Bodo parvulus. The size range 3-7 um is reported in these two investigations. (ref. ID; 4872)

Measurements

Length 3.5 um. (ref. ID; 4872)
