Monitoring of Genetically Modified Organisms

Although commercial cultivation of the genetically modified organisms (GMO) is prohibited in Japan, seeds of the genetically modified crops are imported as food supply, and they often spill out in the course of domestic transport and establish. The rate of GMO in the natural environment may increase in the near future because the cultivation of GMO is expanding in exporting countries.
The long-term effect of the GMO on the ecosystem remains unknown. However, they may have negative impact on the original vegetation by crossbreeding. In this monitoring program, we are focusing on the Brassica napus, and are conducting surveys on the population dynamics and the distribution along Route 51(Ibaraki and Chiba) and Route 23 (Mie).
