Aboutus | CEBES | NIES

The Center for Environmental Biology and Ecosystem Studies (CEBES) was established as one of the eight research centers of the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) on April 1, 2011, in order to assume a leading role in the nation’s basic and applied research for the area of environmental biology and ecosystems. CEBES collaborates with national, prefectural and local agencies, non-governmental organizations and universities in order to contribute to the accumulation of the scientific knowledge and data necessary for the conservation of biodiversity and ecological services.

Research Themes

Thirty permanent researchers, 20 contract researchers and seven graduate students currently conduct research at CEBES, supported by nearly 50 technical and administrative staff, working across the center’s eight sections/offices.

Each section has developed a set of goals and objectives in one of the following thematic areas:

  • Biodiversity Assessment and Projection
  • Biodiversity Conservation Planning
  • Ecosystem Function
  • Ecological Genetics
  • Environmental Stress Mechanisms
  • Bioresource conservation of algae and related protists
  • Impacts of invasive alien species and chemical pesticides on native ecosystem

NIES’ third five-year plan (FY: 2011-2015)

CEBES is taking an active part in the implementation of the third NIES five-year plan, as the center responsible for leading one of the five Priority Research Programs in place at the institute - the Biodiversity Research Program. CEBES also participates in one of the five Advanced Research Programs - the Basin Ecosystem Functions Research Program.
