Biotron

Biotron
This facility is used for small-scale experiments in outdoor and greenhouse conditions. At the site, field experiments to investigate the impacts of environmental change on ecosystems are carried out. This facility is used in the cultivation of plants and is equipped with greenhouse rooms, growth cabinets, and laboratories for recombinant DNA experiments. Environmental variables, including temperature, humidity, gas concentrations, and light can be controlled to assess the impacts on plants.

Microbial Culture Collection

Microbial Culture Collection
This facility is equipped with a system that allows long-term cryopreservation of specimens, economically maintaining a cryogenic environment using liquid nitrogen vapor (temperatures below 160℃). We have been preserving cells and tissues of endangered wildlife species. This facility maintains and cryopreserves subcultures of various microalgae, protozoans, and endangered algae. Since 1983 we have contributed to environmental research by distributing them to researchers inside and outside of the institute for various purposes.

Environmental Genomics laboratory

Environmental Genomics laboratory

Emerging genomics allows the use of whole genomes of endangered species and small amounts of DNA in the environment for environmental conservation. This facility maintains devices (e.g., next-generation sequencers) and a clean experimental environment for analyzing small amounts of DNA, in order to support environmental genome science research.
