Japan is closely connected to other Asian countries both geographically
and economically, and rapid future development is expected in the Asian
region. It is crucial to find ways to preserve the environment and create
a sustainable society in this region taking into consideration Japan's
environmental security and international contribution. The Asian Environment
Research Group conducts research on air quality, long-range transboundary
air pollution, sustainable management of water environments in terrestrial,
coastal, and oceanic areas in Asia, and ecosystem management and conservation
in watersheds of large rivers and other water systems. The following
projects promote Asian environmental management and establish scientific
knowledge as the foundation for policy recommendations to create a sustainable
society through international cooperation. |

Development of Methods for Evaluating Air Quality in Asia This project develops methods for evaluating air quality by combining observational and modeling studies in order to establish the necessary systems for air quality management and integrate scientific knowledge on air quality in the Asian region (with a focus on East Asia) through international collaboration. Development of Systems for Evaluating Regional Water and Material Cycles in East Asia This project develops methods for evaluating regional water and material cycles and for establishing sustainable cities by combining observational, modeling and empirical studies. It aims to establish the necessary systems for sustainable water environment management and integrate scientific knowledge on water environments in East Asian watersheds (mainly in the regions related to the Chang Jiang River and the Yellow River) through international collaboration. Development of Methods for Assessing Watershed Environmental Impacts This project develops methods for assessing the environmental impact of watershed ecosystems in Southeast Asia and Japan, building a network of international programs related to the Mekong River watershed, and providing scientific knowledge to support sustainable development of watersheds through international collaboration. By conducting observational and modeling studies on the watershed environment and the distribution of freshwater-fish species mainly in the Mekong River, this project is able to evaluate the ecological impact of various environmental changes such as the construction of dams.
