Dissemination of Research Findings (pamphlet)

The general public is becoming increasingly interested in environmental research. In addition to its publications and websites, NIES also holds open symposia and open house events to help the public gain an understanding of our research results.

NIES Open Symposium

NIES holds its Open Symposium in Tokyo and one other location every June, which is Environment Month in Japan. The event includes lectures by researchers and poster displays on about 20 research projects. This event gives the general public a chance to interact with NIES researchers and ask questions about their research findings. The events are always well-attended. You can see video of the 2008 symposium on the NIES website (http://www.nies.go.jp/sympo/2008/).

NIES Open House

In order to increase awareness of environmental issues and help people come to an understanding of environmental research and technologies, NIES holds an Open House in April (coinciding with Science Week) and July (during the school vacation). These events include short lectures on environmental topics and a variety of hands-on activities that are fun for people of all ages.

Summer Science Camp

The NIES Summer Science Camp program is open to all Japanese high school students. The program exists to increase students’ awareness of scientific research on the environment. It is held every year during the summer holidays. In the summer of 2008, students carried out fieldwork and laboratory experiments in two locations. Students in one group studied either the effects of air pollution on plant life or the diversity of microorganisms in Tsukuba. Another group examined CO2 monitoring and climate change on Hateruma island.
