Profile of Research Sections
Population Ecology Section
We study the mechanisms of the survival of populations of biological species and interactions among species in changing ecosystems. We are analyzing the survival, reproduction and dispersal ability of organisms as well as the environmental conditions of their habitats to elucidate these mechanisms.
Physiological Ecology Section
We study the physiologicalresponses of biological species to their environments and the genetic bases for these responses. Another study examines how environmental changes at regional- and global-levels affect life.
Microbial Ecology Section
We study the biology and diversity of microorganisms using such techniques as the analyses of phylogenetic classification, genetic variation and physiological and ecological functions of the microorganisms. Also, we conduct research on these organisms and their functions as environmental indicators as well as how to preserve them.
Ecological Genetics Section
We conduct surveys of the biology of flora and fauna living near water and the environmental conditions of their habitats to study the ecological characteristics or genetic dynamics of rare and endangered species from the point of view of preserving ecological functions and biodiversity. We are also developing techniques for the investigation and assessment of the effects of penetration by invading species or genetically-modified species on the environment.
